Grinchification

Every so often, a close bunch of friends and I will get sick of the hustle and bustle of Christmas and go against the grain by NOT buy each other gifts for Christmas.

Instead, we'll do something together as a group. One year we spent Christmas Eve snowboarding, with a subsequent early morning Christmas at the hospital because one of them broke an ankle (good times!). And a few years ago we rented a cabin and went to the Grand Canyon. (Totally wicked idea, I must say)

We actually coined this our "Christmas Resistance." We didn't reject the holidays, just the fact that it's become so commercial and all about buying crap that the other person might just tuck away in the closet. The point being we spent time just being together; eating, talking, drinking, etc.

We found this more memorable and rehash it over and over as the years go by. I don't know why we don't do it more often...
