Happy Turducken Day!

Journal Entry: Thu Nov 26, 2009, 12:13 AM

Today we celebrate the ingenuity of the American spirit!
I'm talking about the Turducken! Who else but us would think of stuffing a bird into another bird. Should we stop there? Hell no! Let's stuff that bad boy into a THIRD bird!
U-S-A! U-S-A!

For those who don't know what it is:

I may sound sarcastic but I actually want to try one.

Man, can you think if we were to carry that one step further? Maybe a bunch of chickens into a pig, and then into a cow. Roast that bad boy in an underground pit, and you got yourself an Ultimate Luau!

A CHICKIGOW! or a COWIGKEN! I may have started something here...

I made myself hungry now. Have a great Thanksgiving guys!

Movies

Just caught "Zombieland" last night, and that movie was HILARIOUS! Did anyone see it? Good stuff! The main actors did such a good job and the story was decent (for a zombie flick) as well. If you can get through the first 5 minutes of gore, you're golden. The 'Rules of Survival' were funny and the way they reiterated them throughout the movie was quite amusing as well.

Tonight I saw "Paranormal Activity" before it went wide. Figure I'd beat the rush and the crowds before the viral marketing kicked in and everyone went to see what the hype was about. Decent flick. Low budget horror done a la "Blair Witch" but without the nausea. It's what I call a slow boil movie. No grand sweeping landscapes or much dialogue. In fact, not much happening visually but I that didn't keep me from looking at the girl's boobs in her tight shirts. But as far as the paranormal-ness, It's the type of movie where it's what you DON'T see that freaks you out more than what you actually do see. I won't say much more but it's a good way to kill some time and freak you out in your own home.

Here's hoping my fellow Americans had a great Independence Day, or what Britain and the rest of the world calls 'Saturday.'

Getting My "Trek" on

I just caught the new "Star Trek." Anyone catch it yet?
One word: Awesome. (IMHO, of course)

I'll try not to give out spoilers, so I'll take as broad strokes and be as general as I can.
It takes the franchise and gives it the revamp and reboot it so dearly needed. The younger, more active cast helping to re-energize it for the 21st century. And it does it in such a way so as not to totally disregard the previous incarnations. That's all I'm going to say about that aspect.

I loved the simplicity of the story, and the special effects were great. A few of the actors took getting used to, but once you resign yourself to that, you're able to strap yourself in for a great ride. They all brought their own flavor to the original characters and yet kept to the mythos that the old series and subsequent movies offered. A new dimension to each of the characters was added, thanks in part to J.J. Abrams' vision, and in a way, helped round out their backstory a little more. Not all their attributes are likeable, but it helps make them more 'human' (sorry, Spock).

I think a few die-hards will complain about this and that (which is to be expected), but overall, I think for each die-hard they lose, a few more fans will be gained. People who love sci-fi or action flicks in general will enjoy the movie, whether you're a Trekker (Trekkie?) or not.

Go see it! (and if you're so inclined, like I am, do the IMAX version. This is the perfect movie for it.)
